Description:
New York & London: Simon & Schuster & Jonathan Cape,, 1963-63-64-66. I hurt, therefore I am An inscribed first US edition, first printing, of the Ipcress File, together with first UK editions, first impressions, of the three following novels in the Harry Palmer series. The Ipcress File's title page is inscribed, "For Chris & Malcolm best wishes - Len Deighton". Billion-Dollar Brain was originally published in America two months prior to the UK edition. Deighton's first novel, the Ipcress File was first published in London in 1962. The US edition followed a year later and retains Raymond Hawkey's striking jacket design, which Deighton much admired. The design "went against the prejudice of the book trade at the time in that it was monochromatic, used discreet typography and a photographic rather than a drawn illustration" (Milward-Oliver). This aesthetic was continued for the works that followed, the Billion-Dollar Brain with the additional feature of being attractively printed on metallic paper. 4… Read More

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1962. [Cold-War thriller] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (20 x 14cm), pp.224. Publisher's orange cloth in original dust-wrapper (without reviews) designed by Raymond Hawkey. Owner name to f.e.p, minor wear and handling, a little rubbed to crown. Very good indeed. Author's debut spy novel, a landmark in the genre, introducing the cult figure of Harry Palmer (although the character's name remained anonymous for some time). Famously portrayed by Michael Caine in the film of the same name (1965), a role he reprised twice in the sixties, followed by two further outings (as a retired secret agent) in the mid-nineties. Described by Ian Fleming in the Sunday Times as one of his 'Books of the Year'. Book Collector No.287 (p.32-62) 'The Sixties'. Milward-Oliver; Len Deighton Annotated Bibliography. Description:
London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1962. Bound in orange paper over boards with gilt lettering on spine. Ends of spine pushed in, and trace wear to tips and bottom of spine, otherwise a fine book without any foxing. First state dust jacket is not price-clipped, retaining original publisher's printed price of 15/-net. The ends of spine panel and flap folds are chipped and browned around the chips. These defects have been professionally repaired with white tissue which blends in exceptionally well with the white of the dust jacket, and is hardly noticeable except for lack of gloss. Jacket design by Raymond Hawkey. Author's first book (issued as Secret File No 1), a spy novel featuring Harry Palmer (un-named in the book) and basis of the 1965 movie starring Michael Caine. 224 pages.. Description:
New York: Simon & Schuster, 1963 First American Edition. New York 1963.

Len Deighton's first spy novel and his first bestseller.
"A high-ranking scientist has been kidnapped. A secret British intelligence agency must find out why. But as the quarry is pursued from grimy Soho to the other side of the world, what seemed a straightforward mission turns into something far more sinister. With its sardonic, cool, (in the book unnamed) working-class hero, Len Deighton's sensational debut The IPCRESS File rewrote the spy thriller and became the defining novel of 1960's London." (buecher)

'Changed the shape of the espionage thriller ... there is an infectious energy about this book which makes it a joy to read' (Daily Telegraph)

Book and Dustwrapper are fine with miniscule shelf wear. Unclipped DW is now protected with a transparent Mylar sleeve.

This english classic is in a wonderful priscine condition. Collector's choice.
