Description:
New York: Viking, 1936. First edition. Fine in very good plus jacket.. First printing of the pacifist children's classic, soon to be banned in Franco's Spain at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War. The first collaboration of Lawson and Leaf, FERDINAND was a hit with children but caused controversy among adults: the story of the bull who would rather smell the flowers than fight with the other bulls was read politically in the context of the Spanish Civil War. Although he hadn't meant for the book to carry an ideological message, Leaf received angry letters claiming he was "deliberately corrupting children of an impressionable age" (quoted in Davis). A wonderful work, in which the beauty of nonconformity still reads as subversive. A nice copy in jacket, and scarce as such. 8.25'' x 7.25''. Original quarter tan cloth, red pictorial boards. Original unclipped ($1.00) red pictorial dust jacket. Yellow pictorial endpapers. Illustrated throughout with black-and-white line drawings by Lawson. [72]… Read More

Pictorial endpapers; b&w illustrations on every other page. Spine ends and corners a bit rubbed, bookseller's stamp on front free endpaper, else a clean, tight copy in original color pictorial dust jacket (spine ends and corners a tad chipped, a small closed tear at top of front panel and another at the bottom, spine a bit sunned).
First edition. The beloved classic tale of a peaceful bull who just wants to sit under his favorite cork tree and smell the flowers. Description:
Viking, 1936. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. An advance copy of the first edition, with "First Published September 1936 on the copyright page." The book is larger than the first edition, and has rough uncut pages. The cover also differs, with brown cloth and sections of the eventual first edition cover attached. This is obviously some sort of advance production copy, probably prepared by Viking Press for internal use. The only copy we have ever seen or heard of. It is in very good condition, with the book block lying loose in the covers. There is no evidence of glue, so the two were probably never attached. Housed in a custom-made collector's slipcase.
