Manufacturing tear on leaf Pp sealed and practically invisible. Some small binder's tears in the gutter of signature G are also carefully sealed. Bottom corner tip of the title page restored (10 x 14 mm). Original full vellum binding (rubbed, usual age-toning) with later gilt title on spine. Upper hinges near the head cap strengthened. Marco Auelio Severino (1580-1656) was a distinguished Italian anatomist and surgeon. In 1610 he was made Professor of Anatomy and Surgery at Naples. Contemporary marbled calf, spine with red morocco, gilt lettered, label, in compartments gilt decorated with fleurons (joints slightly worn with a small crack), edges of sides with gilt ruler; edges red.. With 12 figures in the style of Ryff on 2 folded engraved plates. Raulin first doctor at Nérac (Guyenne) moved to Paris where he became physician to Louis XVI. He was a prolific author of both theoretical and practical works. The present work, written in a very comprehensive languages, was written by order of the French Government who was alarmed by the fatal results in childbirth caused by inexperienced country practitioner. This second edition was published in the same year as the first edition (who had only 168 pp.). This work was translated into Dutch, German and Portuguese. Contemporary brown calf (top and bottom of spine slightly damaged; upper edge of the front side slightly rubbed; corners a bit bumped), Spine in compartments gilt decorated and lettered; speckled edges. Seme wood-engraved head and tail pieces. With a contemporary engraved bookplate of Ludovicus Feuilherade M.D. ¶ Apparently the ONLY copy known of this 1686 Johannem Certe edition. The official "Editio secunda" was published by Certe in 1687. Presumably the 1686 edition was printed at the occasion of Tencke's inauguration at Montpellier in 1686, but the printer overlooked to print the King's approbation within this 1686 edition. Certe has to cancel the edition and released a little bid later (1687) the correct edition with the approbation. The 1686 editions: Montpellier Peronnel & Venice de Rhinetta, are pirate editions. No copy in the BNF or NLM, nor in the World Cat.

Tight in possibly contemporary binding with later? title label: "Medical Topography, 1830", previous owner's name and one line comment on FEP. 2 or 3 pages with some red pencil underlining, one printer's ink stain and two pages with small repaired tears. Very good complete copy of Hermann Köhler's celebrated German study of medicinal botanyWith 283 dynamic botanical chromolithographs mainly signed W.M. (Walther Otto Muller), with others by Carl Friedrich Schmidt and K. or E. Gunther. The botanical plates are justly famous for their attractive design, with all parts of the flower, leaf, branch, fruit and seed displayed over the entire plate.This monumental German herbal was written principally by Hermann Adolph Köhler, edited after his death by Gustav Pabst, and published by Franz Eugen Köhler from 1887-1890. Index in Latin (missing A to D, starts with Eruum), Italian, French, Spanish and German.Perhaps a later pirate copy of Adam Lonicer's Herbarum, arborum, fruticum, frumentorum ac leguminum, Egenolph, Frankfurt, 1546. Lonicer (1528-1586) married printer Christian Egenolph's daughter and became a partner in the firm. From 1551, the firm published herbals under Lonicer's name.Early editions had the plant names printed Latin in Roman and Italic type, and German in Schwabacher type.
