Bando Kriegsgefangenenlager, Japan: Lagerdruckerei, 1917. Softcover. Near Fine. A collection of eight rare printed items little known outside of Germany or Japan. The Bando POW Camp, located near Naruto, Japan, was set up in 1917 to house about one thousand German prisoners, both soldiers and civilians, who had been captured at Tsingtao, China. The collection includes the very rare camp directory: *Kriegsgefangenenlager Bando Adressbuch* (November 1917), with two fine color maps and advertisements; a beautifully illustrated children's book: *Drei Märchen* meant to be sent home to family and friends in Germany; and the final six consecutive issues of *Die Baracke* (April - September, 1919), an illustrated monthly "Zeitung für das Kriegsgefangenenlager" [Newspaper for Prisoners of War]. Second World War photo album compiled by American Red Cross worker Elizabeth Ridley, with three wartime Naval yearbooks & souvenir books owned by her sister Christine, a naval air mechanic in the WAVES programme. Oblong folio (340 x 260 mm). 1941-45. Contemporary dark blue skiver elaborately embossed in grey with military motifs including an American Eagle, planes, tank, battleship, artillery, and blimp. Bound with black nylon ties that may not be original. 80 black paper pages containing 219 photographs attached with photo corners. The photos range in size, with the majority measuring 90 x 60 mm, and the largest 255 x 200 mm. A few items, including some photos, a small colour Kodachrome, several negatives, and an unused Anchor Line trunk label are loosely inserted. Elizabeth has written her name and address on the front free endpaper and annotated many of the photos with white ink. United Art Publishing, 1916. Hardcover. Used- Good condition. Book shows shelf wear. Scuffing along the edges and corners of book. Tear on the left middle side (next to the spine). Blotches of slightly darkened stains on the back cover. Writing on the front end-paper. Tear on the top and bottom of the end-paper up against the binding. All pages are intact. No further markings on the inside of the book. The envelope that originally held the stamps is no longer in the book. All 72 stamps are affixed to the corresponding spaces. I feel that you, who so kindly subscribed to that fund, will like to know how much was subscribed and to what purpose it has been put. The total amount received from members of both Houses of Parliament was £4,918.6.6. [~$450,000 in 2021] The car has been paid for and the balance has been handed to Lord Balfour to be used for his personal benefit in any way he may think fit. Fine leather bound set in recent full dark blue morocco leather. Spines with raised bands, red title labels, and gilt ruling, lettering and decorations of Rampant lion device stamped to spine compartments. Single gilt ruled border on boards. All edges gilt. Some very minor spotting to a few pages of the first volume otherwise a surprisingly bright and fresh set throughout, and uncommon thus. A superior set of Churchill's great war account.

The binding is worn and bumped, and the spine ends are chipped. Bottom corner bumped and creased. Scuffing along the fore edge of the front cover. A sound copy. The text is toned. The two leaves for pages 63-66 have large creases at the top right, affecting the text. Signed by an officer on the front cover. Signed "A. F. Kingman" who is listed in the rear of the book as 2nd Lt / 1st Lt. Capt. Early markings (presumably by Kingman), have pencil notations in the list of names, some marginal notes reading "KIA" for those killed in action. Scarce.
